Core i7 or Core 2

I have seen a lot of people who are confused as to which processor is better for them,the new Core i7 or the older Core 2 Duo or Quad. The answer to this question is quite simple, do you really need the Core i7. For most people the answer should be no because it is a bit overkill at this time. Maybe later on as more applications come out suited to this new processor will it be worth the money. For now, even if you buy outdated technology, the Core 2 series is perfect for gaming and photo editing. The extra money you save not buying DDR3 RAM and a more expensive processor can be better spent on a nice video card, monitor or any accessories such as sound cards or larger hard drives. This will bring a much more noticeable performance difference to your computer than the Core i7 processor. if you have the money though, by all means go out and buy the Core i7 but right now there is just no point to it.

Nokia Unveils Cheapest 3G Handset

PARIS (Reuters) - Nokia unveiled three new cell phone models on Monday, including the cheapest 3G phone to date from the world's top handset maker.

The new 2730 Classic is expected to retail for 80 euros ($108), excluding taxes and operator subsidies, and go on sale from the third quarter of this year.

An analyst said some smaller rivals might sell 3G phones for less, but this was the cheapest model on the market from any top-tier manufacturer.

"The pricing is very, very interesting, especially for operators trying to migrate users to 3G. It will make a difference to sales," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

Intel fined $1.45 billion

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission imposed a record 1.06 billion euros ($1.45 billion) fine on chipmaker Intel Corp on Wednesday and ordered it to halt illegal rebates and other practices to squeeze out rival AMD.

"Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years," European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

The EU executive said Intel paid computer makers to postpone or cancel plans to launch products that used AMD chips, paid illegal, secret rebates so computer makers would use mostly or entirely Intel chips, and paid a major retailer to stock only computers with its chips.

It ordered Intel "cease the illegal practices immediately to the extent that they are still ongoing."

Intel may continue to offer rebates, so long as they are legal, the Commission said.

The EU antitrust fine is the biggest imposed on an individual company, exceeding an 896-million euro penalty last year against glass maker Saint-Gobain for price fixing, and a 497-million euro fine in 2004 on Microsoft for abuse of dominance.

The Commission investigated practices dating back to 2002, and said Europe accounted for 30 percent of Intel's current worldwide 22 billion euro market.

The Commission said Intel must pay the fine, which represents 4.15 percent of the company's 2008 turnover, within three months of the date of the notification of the decision.

Intel, whose microprocessors power eight out of every 10 PCs in the world, posted first quarter sales of $7.1 billion. Analysts estimated the company enjoys a sizeable cash balance, generating close to $10 billion in cash last year.

The Commission, tasked with ensuring companies do not abuse any market dominance or make deals that restrict competition in the 27-country European Union, started its investigation into Intel in 2001 after a complaint by Advanced Micro Devices.

AMD has also filed a U.S. lawsuit against Intel, which is set to be heard in court in 2010.

The Commission characterized its investigation as one of several, citing rulings against Intel by the Japan Fair Trade Commission and the Korean Fair Trade Commission.

It also referred to investigations by the U.S. Trade Commission and the State of New York.

The decision comes against the background of a renewed determination by the United States to pursue dominant companies that use their power to crush rivals.

The U.S. Justice Department's antitrust chief, Christine Varney, announced this week she "will be aggressively pursuing" such abuse

Robot takes over teaching in Tokyo classroom

An experiment in Tokyo was performed to show students that science can be fun. The robot taught a 5th grade class at Kudan Elementary School in Tokyo.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Saya the teacher doesn't mind being poked or pinched, or if the students play in class: she's an android designed to show children that science and technology can be fun subjects.

Saya, a life-like female who started her career as a robot receptionist at Japanese companies and was then re-programed to teach, gave a lesson to fifth-graders at Tokyo's Kudan Elementary School after being carried to the podium.

Professor Hiroshi Kobayashi of Tokyo University of Science, who built Saya, says she's not meant to replace human teachers, just to highlight the joys of technology.

"We are not looking at making something that will take over from teachers, but rather our main reason for building this robot is to use new technology to teach children about technology," Kobayashi told Reuters....

Microsoft- Windows 7 on track for Summer holidays

Microsoft has officially said that Windows 7 is on track for release in the summer holidays. The new OS is supposed to be what Vista should have been two years ago and hopefully this will make up for it.

"SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is on track to release its new Windows 7 operating system in time for the holiday shopping season, an executive said on Monday, confirming talk it is ahead of its own conservative schedule for replacing the unpopular Vista system.
The world's largest software company has so far been vague on specifying the timing of its new operating system, wary of disappointing customers. But it has broadly targeted the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

"Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability," Bill Veghte, senior vice president of Microsoft's Windows business said at an event on Monday, citing good test results on the early version of the system released to developers and the public over the past few weeks...."

Intel found by EU to be anti-competitive

The EU is expected to find Intel guilty of paying computer manufacturers and makers to postpone the launch of computers carrying products other than Intel CPUs.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators are expected to say this week that Intel Corp illegally paid computer makers to postpone or cancel the launch of products containing chips made by its main rival, sources familiar with the case said on Sunday.

The European Commission is set to decide on Wednesday to fine the world's largest chipmaker and order changes to its business practices for what the EU executive sees as "naked restrictions" to competition, the sources said.

There was no indication of how big a fine might be levied. The largest fine levied by the EC for an abuse of market dominance was the 497 million euros ($655 million) demanded from Microsoft on March 24, 2004.

The sources said the Brussels-based Commission is expected to rule that Intel committed two violations in which the firm abused its dominance of the market for central processing units, the chips at the heart of the world's 1 billion personal computers.

The EU executive will say Intel gave rebates to computer makers to restrict or eliminate the use of chips made by its rival, Advanced Micro Devices, and provided other inducements to retailers to sell only machines with Intel CPUs.

In its ruling the Commission will order Intel to end by a specific date those rebates which it deems to be illegal, the sources said.

In its second finding, the Commission will say Intel paid PC makers to delay or scrap the launch of products containing AMD chips. The Commission will characterize the payments as "naked restrictions" to competition, the sources said.

The Commission will state that the violations occurred during a period stretching back eight years, they said.

In committing the first violation, Intel set percentages of its own chips that it wanted PC makers to use, the sources said.

For example, NEC Corp was told that 20 percent of its desktop and notebook machines could have AMD chips, the sources said.

All Lenovo notebooks had to use Intel chips, as did relevant Dell products. The figure was 95 percent for Hewlett-Packard's business desktops, they said.

European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd said the commission had no comment. Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy, speaking by telephone from California also declined to comment.

The EU executive charged Intel in 2007 over illegal rebates to computer makers. In July last year, it charged the firm with paying retailers not to sell PCs using AMD chips.

Intel has said repeatedly it has done nothing wrong.

Why iPod - The age old debate

I know there are probably many posts about this now but recently, a friends came upto me and saw me listening to my iPod. He asked "is that an iPod?" and I answered yes. He replied with "iPods are sh*t". It turned out he preferred the Microsoft Zune despite living in Australia. This got me thinking, what is the real reason people like iPods so much. Of course it is easy to use but there are tons of players from brands like Creative which are even easier to use. There are products which have better features and aren't as limited. So what makes an iPod so great?

iTunes is a slow program (for windows anyway) and it is the only program which you can use your iPod with (fully with all of the features - I know WinZip support some features). It doesn't let you copy music from one iPod to another. Everything which people expect to be able to do is made so difficult. Could it be Apples dominance of the market? Are people afraid to move away from iPod? Experts say that the reign of the iPod has to end some time. There are only so many upgrades you can give a device which is meant to be portable. So what do you think? Is the iPod doomed to fail or will it stay at the top of the food chain for years to come?

Windows 7 RC 1 Released!

Microsoft have released a stable version of Windows 7 accessible to everyone.

Windows 7 is Mocrosoft's latest operating system replacing Vista officially as of January 2010. The release candidate is compatible with any pc which can work with Vista. As an added bonus, Windows 7 will work with programs designed for XP as a further reason for businesses to move away from XP.

You can download the release candidate here

This RC will be supported until June 1 2010 which is when the license key will expire. After this, you will have to pay for the full version of Windows 7 (which is probably going to be the same as this) Have fun!

Conficker Virus Begins Attack!

The conficker virus which threatened to infect millions of computers worldwide on April 1 is now slowly beginning to take effect.

BOSTON (Reuters) - A malicious software program known as Conficker that many feared would wreak havoc on April 1 is slowly being activated, weeks after being dismissed as a false alarm, security experts said.

Conficker, also known as Downadup or Kido, is quietly turning thousands of personal computers into servers of e-mail spam and installing spyware, they said.

The worm started spreading late last year, infecting millions of computers and turning them into "slaves" that respond to commands sent from a remote server that effectively controls an army of computers known as a botnet...

Overclocking Intel E8400

After a lot of thinking and reading, I found out that my computers CPU was very good with overclocking. Today I found out just how good it was.

The CPU started off at 3.0GHz. I started pushing it in giant leaps. When I got to 3.2GHz, I was quite content as my old processor only went from 2.4GHz to 2.53GHz.
Then I found out that people were pushing their PCUs to 3.6GHz with no voltage increase. I managed to do this okay. This was the limit of my DDR2-800 RAM. I learned that to avoid bottlenecks, I needed half of the FSB to be the speed of the RAM. At FSB-1600, I was at the limit.
From then, I wanted to go even further. I overclocked tha RAM. After a lot of playing around with voltages, I managed to get the RAM to 950MHz (I know it can be stable at 960MHz). This allowed me to push my CPU even firther. After lots of burn-in tests, The stable speed was at 4.28GHz! The vcore is at 1.24V (on CPU-Z) and the RAM is at 1.94V

I think this might be the best I can do with my RAM but I know the CPU can go further. The load temperature is only 51 degrees. Keep in mind, this is still with the intel stock cooler!

Even if it isn't as cheap as you had hoped, you can bring these prices to your local computer shop and get them to beat it. Most of the time they would be happy to do it. The best tip I can give you is don't wait for the price to come down. For a lot of things, shortages and economic factors can actually make the prices go up. A lot of companies are now raising the prices for electronics because of the Australian Dollar value dropping. Because of these uncertain times, if you find a good deal on a particuolar part, buy it. Here are a few comparison sites to get you started:

http://www.shopbot.com.au - A good site with a variety of goods with many different websites. You can find almost anything on it.

http://www.staticice.com.au - An excellent site for finding computer parts. The only downside is this is all you can find, if you are looking for other consumer electronics, I suggest looking at Shopbot.

http://www.umart.net - A competitively priced computer store. Good for starting off. Just remember to check the price other stores are selling it at.

http://www.ausprices.com.au - Excellent for finding shops which stock the product in your region

Remember, if therehas been a recent price hike from the manufacturer, you might get lucky and find a store with old stock who are willing to give you the stock at a much lower price.

Optimising Torrent Downloads

Todays topic is how to get the fastest speeds out of your torrent downloads using utorrent (whichever version you prefer)

The First step is to check whether at the very bottom of the window, a green tick is showing. If not it will probably be a yellow tirangle or a red cross. Any of the latter two means something is restricting your downloading. One possible problem may be that your router is stopping access with its hardware firewall. To solve this, you need to open up a port in your router firewall. The port number is the same one you use to download your torrents. Here is how to open up a port on a netgear router.

1. Log into your router settings with your IP address (usually 192.168.1.1)

2. Click on port forwarding.port triggering

3. Click "Add Custom Service" at the bottom of the window

4. Type whatever you like for your service name but try to make it easily identifiable

5. For "Service Type", keep it as your default

6. For both "starting port" and "ending port" put in the port number which you use to download the torrents

7. For Server IP address, enter the IP address of your computer. If you don't know it, go to "attached devices" on the side menu (in a new tab) and find your computer name. It should also have your IP address there.

This should give you the green tick on utorrent

To get even faster download speeds, try limiting your upload speeds. You will find that limiting it at a lower number will sometimes dramatically increase your download speed. But don't get too greedy. After a certain point, the download speed will slow down again.

These are my tips for increasing the download speed of your torrents. These two tricks are what worked best for me. There are still a few more if you do a bit of googling for it.

Today I decided to talk about converting AVI files to MP4 as I seemed to be having a problem with it myself. I used several converting programs to try and convert the video but everytime I did, I would just get a green screen when I tried to play the file. What's more, he original file only played in VLC media player.

After searching a lot on google, people were saying that there is a problem with the Xvid codec on my computer. Despite installing the codec again, the file still didn't work.

The final solution was to download Videora iPod converter and convert the video from AVI to iPod video. It was a veru easy program to use. You just select the file to convert, select your ipod and it will convert the video and even import it into iTunes for you. For some reason it seemed to be the only way the AVI file would convert. Best thing about it is that Videora is FREE!

So next time you need to convert an AVI file and it doesn't work, you know which software to try.

Remove DRM protection from WMA files legally (I think)

Haven't been on in ages, but I was recently trying to get rid off the drm from my wma files so I could add it to itunes. I got the songs for free of puretracks thanks to Windows Live Search Club. I was searching on the internet and I found heaps of software which was probably illegal or cost anything above $0. I started to experiment with the files and I discovered a way to remove the DRM from a file (only WMA) without downloading any software or doing anything illegal. It only becomes illegal if you share the song.

Requirements:
-CD/DVD burner
-Burning software (I used Nero 6 OEM which came with my DVD burner)
-Some sort of media player

First: You download the protected WMA file
Second: You go into your burning software and burn this file(s) to a CD or DVD as an audio CD/DVD
Third: After the burning has finished, you go into your media player of choice and rip the CD, make sure you don't add copy protection again if you are using Windows Media Player.

It's as simple as that.

Perfect Computer

Hi,

Well I haven't posted in along time but I have been busy. Today I wanted to talk about what specifications you should use to build you perfect computer for different budgets.
I am only going to use intel processors as they seem to perform better than AMD processors and only using Gigabyte motherboards as I haven't really had much experience with other brands. Gigabyte motherboards also seem to be the least problematic.
NB: All prices are in AUD
Also, all prices are from staticice.com. They are carrecta s of today. Prices will most likely come down.
Firstly, there is under $500.
Well, you can't really build a decent computer for under $500 but it can be done. It can be for word processing and surfing the internet. Forget about gaming at this budget.

Motherboard: Gigabyte Ga-G31M-S2L with Intergrated Graphics
CPU: Intel E2180 2.0GHz

Playstation 3: Slim & Lite

Yes, Sony has done it again, another slim console. This playstation 3 slim & lite photo has been released on T3 Magazine March 2008 issue. It features the same 3.2GHz cell processor and pretty much the same features. Not sure on exact specs yet but here is the picture:

Macbook Air

So, Apple has released a new gadget. The Macbook Air. Is it just me or does this gadget yell "Rip-Off!". Sure it is the thinnest laptop in the world (only by a few millimeters), it is about as thick as your finger at the thickest part, and it has multi touch touch pad capabilities. So does the Macbook and Macbook Pro. The Macbook Air compromises on too many aspects. Firstly, it has no optical drive which isn't too much of a let down as many people don't use the optical drives but it would have been nice to have one. Next, it only has one USB port which will be taken up by a mouse and if you don't use a mouse then it will be taken up by an external optical drive (AUD$79) or the AUD$35 USB Ethernet add-on. Of course you could get a USB hub but thats another accessory to lug around. There are few more downsides to this laptop but I won't bore you with the information. The laptop with 2GB of memory and its old 65nm Core 2 Duo processor comes to the low low proce of AUD$2500 or if you want the 64GB solid state drive AUD$4000. If you're into a good looking really portable laptop for basic things such as email, word processing and browsing then this is the laptop for you but if you want a more powerful laptop, look elsewhere.

Intel® Desktop Board D5400XS

Intel has released a new desktop board in their desktop extreme series. It can take upto 2 quad core processors and can run both SLI and Crossfire at full speed (all sockets x16) with 4 video cards. Unfortunately it only supports upto DDR2-800 RAM and if you're going to dish out around US$600 for it then it isn't enough. But, overall it looks like a great motherboard.

Review: Playstation 3

The Playstation 3 was a much hyped gaming console for its time. It boasts an 8-core 3.2Ghz cell processor and an intergrated blu-ray player. It has even been used as a supercomputer. But does it live up to this hype? In my opinion the answer is yes. I believe that the Playstation 3 has jaw-dropping graphics (provided it is played on a 1080p television), it has improved features such as built in wi-fi and bluetooth. The interface is nice and easy to use as well. Most of the games released for Playstation 3 do not take full advantage of the power it has. This is because most of the games are multi platform so developers find no point in spending extra money to make the PS3 or Xbox 360 version better. One game which sort of has and will take advantage of the PS3s power is Gran Turismo 5. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has shown us the amazing graphics the PS3 is capable of. The Playstation 3 is in a different league to the Wii and the 360.

The games are produced on Blu ray disc so manufacturers have 50GB to play with when developing games. recently Sony has released the 40GB version in Australia and sales have increased significantly. But although the 40GB version is cheaper than the 60GB version it comes at a big price. Firstly the Playstation 3 40GB comes with no backwards compatibility with PS2 games. Secondly, there are only 2 USB Ports and no Memory Card slots. not to mention the 40GB hard drive. In my opinion and in several other peoples opinions, it is more like a PS2.5. In Japan the Dual Shock 3 controller is out. It is basically a heavier SIXAXIS with rumble. Another thing worth mentioning is that the PS3 is also the best and cheapest blu ray player ever. Since HD-DVD lost the format war it is probably a good investment. It is the only blu ray player which has upgradeable firmware meaning that when Blu-Ray profile 2.0 comes out, you don't need to buy a new Blu-Ray player. It can also play games, access the internet, and stream music and video. Over the year the PS3 has been out, it has changed a bit. But the PS3 is still the most powerful gaming machine and blu ray player on the market.
